The commitment to respect the environment and people underlies all Zilor’s businesses. The company constantly invests in technologies to reduce the impacts generated by our operations, taking care of our employees while generating value for stakeholders. Biorigin is one of Zilor’s business units and follows these same principles.
Our production process uses renewable resources, including molasses – our primary raw material for yeast production – derived from sugar production and electricity generated from sugarcane bagasse. All these resources are controlled and have reduction targets.
The Sustainability Report is one of Zilor’s and Biorigin’s commitments. It documents our ESG performance, describing how our activities and products contribute to the sustainable development agenda and simultaneously create value for the shareholders, employees, suppliers, partners, and all other audiences connected to our business model.
In 2022, the priority themes of the 8th edition of the report were updated according to the Materiality Matrix, which established nine priority strategic themes.

Clean Energy: More than 90% of Zilor/Biorigin’s direct emissions
are biogenic. This means that CO2 emissions were previously captured by the sugarcane growth cycle, with no direct contribution to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Climate change is addressed by measuring and annually reporting our GHG emissions. Biorigin has been a member of the GHG Protocol since 2018, a global program that defines the measurement and management of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by private and public sector operations and value chains and the mitigation actions applied. An independent third party validates our inventory. The audit results earned us the Gold Seal in the GHG Protocol.

Ecovadis is a collaborative platform that provides sustainability ratings of suppliers in the global supply chain. Biorigin became a member of Ecovadis in 2016.
The Sedex is a not-for-profit membership association that promotes responsible and ethical business practices in global supply chains. Biorigin has been a member of Sedex since 2012, and Smeta audits it.
The Bonsucro label promotes sustainable production and defines production standards based on best social, environmental, and economic practices. Biorigin was the first company in its sector to obtain the Bonsucro Chain of Custody certification for yeast extracts and derivatives produced from fermentable sugar creams and sugarcane yeast creams, reinforcing our commitment to social, environmental, and economic practices based on sustainable supply.
