Biorigin SUSTAINABILITY report 2022/2023 highlights SOCIAL and ENVIRONMENTAL responsibility actions

The Report includes business issues and environmental, social, and governance aspects that include climate change and innovation

Biorigin is Zilor’s business unit that, using biotechnology, develops natural ingredient solutions for human and pet foods and livestock nutrition.

The company continues to be dedicated to innovation, quality, productivity, and efficiency to make the most of the yeast fermentation process and develop, with its partners, the best solutions to create tasty and successful recipes.

To demonstrate our commitment to transparency and social-environmental responsibility, we published our Annual Sustainability Report, highlighting the 2022/2023 harvest year and including data on Zilor’s operations from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023. You can read some relevant pieces of information in this article.

RESULTS OF THE 2022/2023 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

We achieved the best results in our 76 years of history, with a record net revenue of BRL 3.4 billion, 6% higher than the previous year. Biorigin’s activities contributed to 20% of that result.

The Biotechnology Unit’s operations have an export profile: around 90% of production is sold to more than 60 countries, serving the North American, European, Latin American, and Asian markets.

The company has 3,600 employees, of which 527 are direct employees of Biorigin and 190 are apprentices and interns. We have partnerships with 44 universities and research institutes throughout Brazil and 20 universities abroad.

SUSTAINABILITY

As we are concerned with the current use of natural resources and its impact on biodiversity, we pay close attention to initiatives related to environmental management and the reduction of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The report also highlights our environmental actions and certifications to promote and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability.

Since 2014, through the Florestar Program, more than 1 million seedlings have been planted, and 631 hectares have been reforested, an area corresponding to 631 soccer fields!

It should be noted that the generation of clean and renewable electrical energy supplies 100% of the energy needs of Zilor’s plants. BRL 19.7 million were invested in social-environmental actions (Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) + communities), and a BRL 44 million revenue was obtained with Decarbonization Credits – CBIOS sales.

In addition to scopes 1 and 2, our emissions report now includes scope 3, relative to the logistics chain, until products are delivered at the destination ports.

It also allows us to maintain the management system certifications of the Brazilian units:

SOCIAL IMPACT

Zilor and Biorigin also make social investments, with actions that contribute to reducing inequalities and promoting Brazil’s sustainable socioeconomic development.

In the 2022/2023 harvest year, more than BRL 3.7 million were allocated to support communities, including own resources and contributions via Tax Incentive Laws, financing 27 social projects, and 220 sponsorship and donation actions. In total, more than 51,000 people were benefited!

Zilor also provided BRL 450,000 to community youth leadership initiatives, and 81.5% of income tax funds were invested in the communities.
